My 9-year-old son was headed to "green" with anxiety over my being completely absorbed in a computer project. He approached me in a new exciting way. "Mom, what color are you on?" I knew immediately he was wishing to communicate with me in grump meter language- not his usual language of acting angry to get my attention.

I was so excited that I immediately got up from my computer and attended to him. His invitation to me to "pay attention" to him paid off. We interacted for several minutes, then he was satisfied and went on to play, and I was able to return to my project.
